Final Project: Love/Hate Bots
November 28, 2008
I’m feeling a bit stressed since the Crits are coming up very soon!! I feel like the robots aren’t cooperating with me and working the way I want them to. My first batch were a failure and this batch is making me stressed. I really need to work up better ways to transfer the work from the breadboard to the piece. I’ve been scared to use the Lilypad because I have no idea wha would happen if I messed up.
Conductive thread hasn’t been that good for the piece. I feel as if the voltage cannot support the lighting up of the LEDs compared to the wire. I guess I’m going to be sticking to the wire for most of the robots.
MY CRIT IS IN 6 DAYS!! I need more sleep to maybe get the robots working better. I think the lack of sleep is making me more human error and the fumes from the solder is just fun to deal with. I think I should have rented a filter fan.

Final Project: Image³

My printer broke down. What a wonderful week it is. I guess since there is no class today, I will go out to buy a new printer. I think I have to make all the squares again so there would be no difference in the quality of the printing. My old printer is old and the colour is not as nice as it should be.

My idea has changed a bit since the the first idea. I plan to do my image cubes that have not only images of the faces and parts of the faces. The majority of the idea is the same. I will still have it able to build together with other cubes that create faces with many different faces. The idea relates to the book of Frankenstein with the features that would make one very beautiful but actually is not due to the mixing of the qualities.
The cubes itself will have information like statistics and quotes related to beauty and image. I would like to make a program that extracts quotes and things people write about beauty and image on blogs.

I think that Japanese culture seems to influence my work. The characters that are designed by Japanese artist seem to be a thing that I like and get ideas from. I collect many Japanese Vinyl figure that I like. I have them all over my room and desk which might influence my work more than I thought it would. I think the design of the robot has a resemblance to Danbo from Yostuba. t would be interesting if the robot was money activated. I wonder how I would try to make that work. Danbo was actually a person wearing a cardboard robot suit, that took the money and just moved around.

I think that I’ve decided to do Robots and mave people experience the interaction with it. I don’t have the whole idea mapped out but I want to make many robots that react differently to the interaction like it might light up a heart that is on the robot or it might make a horrible noise. I finished doing sketches of the idea I want to do and now I have to plan all the parts I need to buy. I already have some materials left from last year, but I probably need to buy some red LEDs and some buttons and switches. I think I need to buy a new solder iron tip and maybe some more solder.

While looking through the http://infosthetics.com/ website I was attracted to two pieces. I was interested in Christoph Niemann’s Subway Map Bathroom Tiling. The piece is similar to the piece I propose to do for my final project. I was also attracted tp the piece Emotionally Vague Survey Results. The piece that attracted me most was Emotionally Vague Survey Results since the image was the main reason for my interest. I was interested in seeing what the piece was about. I found Subway Map Bathroom Tiling already tells me what the project is about from the name and also from what I can guess it is about. So at http://infosthetics.com/ the piece I chose was Emotionally Vague Survey Results. The link is http://www.emotionallyvague.com/. The image on the site was interesting enough to make me want to click it to see what it is about. I never thought survey results can be that interesting. The way the author Orlagh O’Brien put together the piece was very visually pleasing and provoking to the senses.
The visuals that Orlagh O’Brien used were representational to the human body. There are the generic human body drawing with the results gathered from 250 men and women from 35 countries between the ages 6 to 75. He also broke it down to words, colours, dots, and human body images. I found the fifth question he askes has the most interesting results for images. The question was “Do your emotions have direction? If yes, draw arrows.” and for the five human drawings that represent a different emotion they tend to flow out. There are 3 out of five that have the emotions flowing out, but the other two have both flowing in as the majority and flowing out as a minority for human drawing. The colour representation for the emotion is also interesting. Since the anger colour represented was red and for the majority of the people they found red as the love emotion.
I found the the simplicity in the represenation in the images for the results interesting and easy to understand. I think Orlagh O’Brien could have chose a more technology intensive way to show the results but he did not. It was a good thing that he did not since then the older generations that participated in the piece can also see their participation to the piece without all the troubles of installing flash or something to have to view it. They might not even comprehend it as easily if it was just dots and lines done in processing or someoeth program. I find simple things can provide a great imapct on the society with everything that is graphically intensive.

I want to do something related to textile and not too complicated. I think my brain will explode if I take on a challenge that is too hard for me. I had so many technical difficulties with Norm’s project. The worst problem was my project was a bit big and broke during traveling to school on the bus and subway on a rainy day. I was inspired by the Nuit Blanche project at McCaul, Daisuke Takeya’s Everybody Loves You 2. I want to make these things that express love. I’m thinking monsters or robot looking things that look somewhat hideous yet cute.

Proposal v2
October 18, 2008
In the society image seems to be the first impression in people’s mind. They judge people by their faces and not even give it a thought. People have become obsessed with looks and the vanity of beauty. I propose to do a project that is based on the theme of the face.
I will cut out images of faces from magazines and flyers to fold cubes. The cubes can be placed together to build “faces” that are a mix of all types of faces and parts of the face. The cube will allow people to make three eyed people or some people that are strange looking. It is a piece that is very narrative and interactive. The people looking at the piece can pick up the cube and turn it around and place it anywhere and with any other cube. The piece is like a modified jigsaw puzzle meet with Rubik Cube.
The selection process is just from magazines and I will cut out all the images of the faces in the magazine or try to since they are doubles sided and I cannot get all the faces. I will chose some magazines that are not only about fashion and beauty so I can have people that are not airbrushed and made to seem perfect. I will also but in faces of other things to add a variety like robots, and animals.
I wish to make people see that all the beautiful images of celebrities can be turned to not so perfectly beautiful people while having fun doing that.
